HeartMind, Beginner’s Mind
Bodywork Experience
This 60 hour experiential course in HeartMind Bodywork serves as a rich and empowering overview of the HeartMind Shiatsu methodology and philosophy. Participants engage in daily practical study of the basic hands on practice of HeartMind Shiatsu supported by Tai Chi, Qigong and Meditation. Dynamic, two-hand palpation methods as well as specialized mobilization, positioning and stretching techniques are learned and practiced under experienced supervision. The Yin Yang Theory is explored in the context of the Channel Theory of Chinese medicine. Students learn the Twelve Regular Channels in form and function, and are introduced to Meridian extension theories, and the Eight Extraordinary Vessels. Simple direct tools for opening, harmonizing and balancing the meridian energy in the body through stretching, rocking, compression and mobilization are practiced. In addition to 50 hours in the classroom, students are required to receive one professional private HeartMind Shiatsu session from the Instructor. As well as being an excellent stand alone continuing education opportunity, this course serves as a thorough overview and introduction to the HeartMind Shiatsu, 300 hour Training. Successful participants may improve their chances of acceptance into the 300 hour Training, and a significant portion of their registration fees can be applied to full tuition.
Level I books and chart are required study aids for HeartMind, Beginner’s Mind, and a floor mat is recommended. Students are asked to dress modestly and comfortably and observe all the decorum standards of the full-time program.
The HeartMind Shiatsu, 280 hour Training is designed to meet national standards for modality training as set forth by the AOBTA, American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia (www.aobta.org). The pre-requisites necessary for entering the training include a high school diploma, with some college level experience recommended. An eagerness to learn and the ability to participate in a full time training over three months is necessary. The 300 hour program includes:
• HeartMind Shiatsu Theory and Practice: 160 hours
• Supervised Clinical Experience: 70 hours
• Tai Chi/Qigong: 40 hours
• Business and Ethics 5 hours
• Professional private sessions: 5 hours
HeartMind Shiatsu Theory and Practice is grounded in Japanese healing touch and Classical Chinese Medicine. Students learn a full range of traditional floor-based bodywork techniques to open, balance and harmonize the meridian Qi in the body mind and spirit through effortless compression, specialized stretching and elegant mobilization. In addition students learn the Classical Chinese Medicine theories of the 12 Regular Channels of Meridian Energy Flow, Traditional Five Element Energetics, Masunaga Kyo/Jitsu Hara Assessment Methods and Meridian Extensions, Character and Temperament Aspects of the HeartMind and the Eight Extraordinary Vessel theory. (For a more detailed description of the curriculum with learning goals and assessment methods see below.)
The practice of Tai Chi/Qigong unifies the core strength of your being, building the self-cultivation necessary for an accomplished practice in HeartMind Shiatsu. This slow moving meditation emphasizes relaxation and coordination of breathing with motion. It promotes balanced Qi flow throughout the mind, body and heart. Students study yang style Tai Chi Chuan and internal Qigong exercises for strength, health and longevity in a traditional setting along with the larger community of Tai Chi Students of the Body Balance School (www.bodybalancenc.com). In addition to supporting your HeartMind Shiatsu practice, Tai Chi training establishes a foundation for life-long wellness.
Seventy hours of Supervised Clinic give students the experience of seeing fifty clients with supervision. This builds confidence in technique, and the ability to address a wide range of client needs, helping students build a successful HeartMind Shiatsu practice. Fifty hours of clinical work will be held in the classroom working with clients from the general public. An additional twenty hours of supervision will be given as an Externship, with students working directly with special populations in the local community. As students progress through their study, steady improvement in their practice will be realized. Five hours of Business and Ethics will augment the clinic, and lay the foundation for a professional approach to Bodywork as a career.
Receiving Bodywork Sessions is essential to the maintenance of good health and spirits. For the bodywork professional, it is a necessity. In order to give, you must receive, and it makes good business sense to show that you value the service you provide. Students will receive course credit for up to five sessions over the course of the program, and at least two HeartMind Shiatsu sessions need to be received from an Instructor during the training.
