Professional Training Program Overview
HeartMind Shiatsu Professional Training is perfect for the person seeking to build a fulfilling career in the holistic healing arts with professional level skills as an Asian Bodywork Therapist (ABT*). Our comprehensive 500 hour career training meets all national standards for professional practice. Successful graduates can earn the status of Certified Practitioner with the American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia (aobta.org, the premier professional association for ABT, since 1988). Led by Matthew Sweigart, AOBTA® – Certified Instructor, and combining the holistic disciplines of Classical Chinese Medicine with Traditional Japanese Floor-based Bodywork Therapy, HeartMind Shiatsu puts an intuitive, creative, profound and powerful healing approach in your hands and heart. The program is affiliated with the Healing Spirits Massage Training Program, Boulder’s longest running Massage Therapy training.
The program is offered as a series of modular weekend immersion experiences over the course of 20 months. The program is expertly designed to move you progressively through beginning, intermediate, and advanced studies to arrive at full, professional therapeutic competence. And a hall mark of the program is personal wellness and energy cultivation and encouragement to develop your own unique gifts, specifically tailored to meet the needs of your special population.
Following is an overview of all program modules. Elevate Your Bodywork, Pathways of Qi, and Touching Ki – Healing Secrets are all entry level, and provide a solid foundation to begin your study, and are also an integral part of the HeartMind Shiatsu professional training. From this foundation three levels: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Trainings give you the full and complete education you need to be a professional ABT. Successful graduates earn the title of Certified HeartMind Shiatsu Therapist, a professional mark of distinction in the healing arts, and may apply to AOBTA® for their Certified Practitioner professional status.
*ABT is manual therapy based in the Asian Holistic Medicine. Just at Physical Therapists are the manual therapy deliverers of Western Medicine, Asian Bodywork Therapists are the manual therapists of Eastern Medicine. Ask your acupuncturist for a referral today!

Pathways of Qi*
Two-day Fundamentals Workshop
Tune up your energy system and strengthen your energy body in this twelve hour workshop exploring the Pathways of Qi. A true “owner’s manual” for being alive in human form, the primary energy meridian system of Chinese medicine animates, governs and informs all functions of body, mind and spirit, from nourishment and digestion to higher thought, emotional intelligence and spiritual awakening!
In this two day course you learn:
• the essential Meridian Gesture Qigong form
• daily exercises and wellness practices
• meditations and reflections on life energy flow
• healing touch methods to improve vital energy

Healing Secrets of HeartMind Shiatsu
Five-day Immersion Experience
Discover the profound secret sauce behind the HeartMind Shiatsu method in this powerful and delightful five day immersion experience.
This is the first module of the full HeartMind Shiatsu professional training. Students discover this revolutionary, yet timeless method of healing touch to soothe the woes of the modern world. Students learn an entire basic, full-body treatment in the HeartMind Shiatsu method, treating the 12 primary meridian channels of body, mind and spirit.
Basics of Western Anatomy and the Ethics of professional practice are also introduced to set the stage for practical application to a myriad of presenting conditions. Students give and receive bodywork throughout the course, creating a deep experience of healing connection with a cohort of fellow students of like mind an heart.
This course is the first course in the HeartMind Shiatsu Professional Training. It may be taken as a stand alone continuing education experience. Warning!!! It may be habit forming!
HeartMind Shiatsu 500-Hour Professional Training
Level 1 – Foundations of Asian Bodywork Therapy
Basic Training provides the foundation for a fulfilling career as an Asian Bodywork Therapist. Our talented teachers inspire you with a deep study of the powerful Chinese Medical model and the profound beauty of the Japanese floor-based bodywork healing arts. Four convenient 5 day weekend immersion modules; Touching Ki (101), Elemental Meditations (102), Harmonizing Yin and Yang (103) and Basic Clinical Applications (104) start you on your journey to mastery of this highly effective method of healing touch. Western Anatomy and Physiology is interwoven to foster the integration of a truly holistic East-West perspective.
Western Anatomy & Physiology
Beginning during Basic training and carrying on through the Advanced course, the science of Western Anatomy & Physiology is woven throughout the training, with an eye toward shining an Eastern viewpoint on this classic Western physical science. Integral to the study, is the focus on the wonder and sophistication of the human body, and all its working parts. Since the study of the Eastern approach to the body, mind and spirit is quite like learning a foreign language, the study of Western science gives students a lexicon, or a bridge between East and West. Grounding the healing touch practice in a deep understanding and appreciation of the physical body, the study of Western Anatomy and Physiology also provides students with common language to speak about their findings and treatment choices in a way that effectively communicates with the Western approach. Integrating the Western and Eastern viewpoints and approaches is enlightening and enlivening to the classroom experience.
Level 2 – Classical Chinese Medicine
In our Intermediate training you truly begin to enter into the beauty and grace of the form refining your skills in the artful body movement and therapeutic touch of HeartMind Shiatsu. Underpinning that deepening skill are the profound teachings of Classical Chinese Medicine. Four five-day immersion modules lead you progressively toward greater and greater mastery of HeartMind Shiatsu. The Qi of Personality and Temperament (201), Patterns and Syndromes, the Chinese Medicine Viewpoint (202), Kitchen Alchemy (203), and Intermediate Clinical Applications (204) make up the four modules of this level of training. Knowledge of Meridian functions and Five Element actions are taken deeper, into an exploration of interactions and the multiple patterns and variations of life energy flow. Intermediate Training gives you profound tools and expert guidance to help you develop your intuitive and observational skill to enter into profoundly effective therapeutic interactions with your clients.
An entire module in the Intermediate Training is devoted to the exploration of nutrition and diet and it’s central role in health and wellness. The Chinese Medical perspective on food as medicine gives you an important understanding for helping clients work through their daily dietary challenges. In addition to the Chinese Medicine perspective on nutrition, students learn to develop a discerning and understanding of several contemporary nutritional approaches. In the course, students study the energetics and physiological effects of food on wellness. Students are encouraged to promote healthy eating habits, discover powerful applications of Classical Chinese Medicine theory as it relates to dietary choice, explore specific applications of a therapeutic diet for the overall organic health of all bodily systems as well as specific client needs. In the process, students learn to assess major dietary challenges, and to help coach clients through creating tasty, healthy and transformative dietary changes. Lively lectures and discussions as well as recipes and food preparation secrets will highlight the class. Kitchen homework assignments as well as creating dietary counseling handouts, will help the students with specific application of the teachings of Kitchen Alchemy.
We continue to interweave Western Anatomy and Physiology into the program, giving the student the language and tools to interact effectively in wellness field in the Western world.
Level 3 – Healing at the Source, the Dynamics of Destiny
To complete the training and give you expertise with the full depth and power of Asian Bodywork Therapy our Advanced Training dives deep into the art of healing at the source. The Classical Chinese Medicine model of the Extraordinary Vessels provide a guiding structure for working with the dynamics of destiny and life path. With expert guidance students enter into a deep study of these source vessels and how to access and work with them to heal a wide range of life issues from the simple day to day challenges of lifestyle and survival to the the profound healing of trauma and loss. Four powerful immersion modules take students on this profound healing journey. The Healing Power of Destiny, The Extraordinary Vessels, Vessels of First Ancestry, Working Your Energy Blueprint (301), Cycles of Aging and Development, Using Wei Mai Vessels to Support all Stages of Life (302), Power of Presence, Understanding and Working With the Qiao Mai Vessels (303) and Advanced Clinical Applications and the Awarding of Certificates (304) crown this outstanding training! Woven into the study at the advanced level is the exploration of Somatic education, drawing from the great innovators in the field for effectively support the healing of trauma and a range of recovery goals. Successful graduates possess the deeply grounded skills necessary for offering profound healing services and creating a satisfying career of contribution and care in the arts of healing touch.
Private HeartMind Shiatsu Sessions
Students enjoy the benefits of receiving 10 private HeartMind Shiatsu sessions over the course of the training. These sessions address a student’s personal healing, growth and wellness concerns, and help them discover first hand, the scope and depth of the method.
Small Group Tutorials
Five three-hour, small group tutorials fill out the classroom experience. Two to four students meet with their instructor for direct instruction on their most pressing questions and areas of challenge with the technique and theory. These focused tutorial groups lead to a swift deepening and refinement of methodology, assuring professional mastery of HeartMind Shiatsu.
Elevate Your Healing Bodywork Practice and Pathways of Qi are included in the entire 500 hour training program, and may be taken before, during or after completion of the training. If taken before, the cost of these introductory weekends can be applied to overall tuition upon entry into the Intermediate Level.
